Los Angeles (transient then not)
When I arrived in Los Angeles I was going to be here six weeks, maybe three months. Ha ha ha! I've been here forty-eight years.
Man plans and the gods laugh.
I thought car drivers here were crazy, crazier than they were in Denver, for instance. Took me a while to get it. They were normal. I was crazy for riding on their home turf.
Los Angeles! Freeways, highways, avenues, streets, even back roads. Square miles and more square miles of houses not necessarily on a grid. Tall buildings, short buildings, warehouses, and even shacks. Motels. Grand hotels, crumby hotels, and hotels between. Beaches, hills, valleys so large they are called The. It's a wonderful place, an inspiring place, an aspiring place, a scary place, and a terrifying place. It's as much fun as you could want and no fun at all. It's Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Downtown. It's a zillion named neighborhoods and maybe a hundred incorporated towns. It's a mess and a haven and a maze.
The Dragnet detective used to intone, "There are a million stories in the city." Closer to ten million now.
Most of us are here by choice, many of us are captives.
Los Angeles!
