Las Cruces - Graduate School
Before I quit in Houston, I made sure I had a place to go. The Physics department from which I had graduated welcomed me back with a fellowship to study Physics and minor in creative writing. It was like winning a prize when you're up to your armpits in a swamp!
We got back to Las Cruces and found a small house to rent way the hell off and gone from campus. That lasted a month or two in my memory. We found another small house to rent much nearer campus and settled in for five years as I remember.
Las Cruces had changed, built up, expanded. It had a larger population, more people who worked at WSMR, but also just more people. The First National Bank there had a huge new building.
In a way, it didn't matter, not to me. I was pretty much absorbed in my studies and didn't really look up or around me until my fellowship ran out. I was lucky. I found part-time work at WSMR tht should have allowed me time to work on my dissertation. Somehow it didn't. I think now I had run out of drive for academic work.
Whatever. I was lucky again. A friend from Lunar Orbiter days called with a helluva job opportunity back in the unmanned exploration of space. Yes please!
