coaching our heroes
while reading your Bible, do you ever
find yourself coaching the characters?
telling the princess, once she's found Moses,
to get herself a husband? or Moses to give her a name?
show her a little gratitude?
suggest to Samson that he hold his temper?
tell Job to tough it out? or the minor prophets just to hush?
no one is ever gonna listen anyway,
besides they're just repeating themselves
or each other? tell Bathsheba to just relax and enjoy it,
her son will be a celebrated king?
the Bible is full of people behaving impulsively
as, I suppose, the world is. how else would we have gotten here?
but it's also full of people knowing they are doing God's will
as, I suppose, the world is now
but couldn't just once someone hear a voice
reminding him or her that what he or she is about to do
will make the Lord smite them dead?
or are those voices there and I don't hear them?
